हाल ही में मुझे एक वीडियो मिला जिसमें दावा किया गया कि हमारे सेना के जवान लेफ्टिनेंट जनरल हुड्डा को बेवकूफ बना रहे थे। जो लोग लेफ्टिनेंट जनरल हुड्डा के बारे में नहीं जानते उनके लिए यहां दो पंक्तियों का विवरण है।

प्रिय सर,

सबसे पहले, मैं आपका धन्यवाद करना चाहूंगा कि आप अपने व्यस्त समय में से समय निकालकर मेरा पत्र पढ़ रहे हैं।

दूसरे, मैं सीधे मुद्दे पर आता हूँ ताकि आपका कीमती समय न बर्बाद हो। जैसा कि आप जानते हैं, हाल ही में रूस ने यूक्रेन पर हमला किया। मैं इस संघर्ष में भारत की स्थिति का सम्मान करता हूँ, जिसमें भारत ने तटस्थ रहते हुए युद्ध की निंदा की। लेकिन भारत के अलावा अन्य देशों ने पक्ष लिया है, कुछ रूस का तो कुछ यूक्रेन का। पश्चिमी देशों ने भी यूक्रेन का समर्थन करने का निर्णय लिया है। हालांकि, आपको शायद सामान्य लोगों से अधिक जानकारी हो।

पश्चिमी देश यूक्रेन को हथियार, मीडिया समर्थन, वित्तीय सहायता प्रदान कर रहे हैं और यूक्रेनियन शरणार्थियों को शरण दे रहे हैं। इस संघर्ष में देशों के साथ-साथ बहुराष्ट्रीय कंपनियाँ जैसे गूगल, विंडोज, एप्पल, टेस्ला आदि ने भी यूक्रेन का पक्ष लिया है। सामान्यत: ऐसी बड़ी कंपनियाँ संघर्षों से बाहर रहती हैं या गुप्त रूप से समर्थन देती हैं।

कंपनियाँ पक्ष लेने का विचार बुरा नहीं है, क्योंकि ये भी देशों/सरकारों का एक हिस्सा होती हैं, जिनका उद्देश्य शक्ति और नियंत्रण स्थापित करना होता है। इस सब को कहने का मेरा मतलब यह है कि ऐसा हमारे (भारत) साथ भी हो सकता है। भले ही हम (भारत) देशों को धमकाते या डराते नहीं हैं, फिर भी हम (भारत) इन विदेशी सरकारों की दया पर हैं, जो इन कंपनियों का समर्थन हटा सकती हैं और हमें नुकसान पहुँचा सकती हैं।

उदाहरण के लिए, अगर कंपनियाँ जैसे माइक्रोसॉफ्ट, एप्पल और गूगल अपना समर्थन हटा लें, तो किसी भी सॉफ़्टवेयर को चलाने के लिए एक ऑपरेटिंग सिस्टम (OS) की आवश्यकता होती है, जो ये कंपनियाँ प्रदान करती हैं। माइक्रोसॉफ्ट विंडोज प्रदान करता है, जो दुनिया का सबसे लोकप्रिय डेस्कटॉप OS है, और गूगल एंड्रॉइड के विकास के लिए फंड प्रदान करता है। सर, हमारे देश का अधिकांश भाग विंडोज पर चलता है, चाहे वह न्यायालय हों, सरकारी कार्यालय हों या बैंक। अगर आज माइक्रोसॉफ्ट यह सोचता है कि वह विंडोज का समर्थन बंद कर देगा, तो पूरी प्रणाली में अराजकता फैल जाएगी। सॉफ़्टवेयर समर्थन और अपडेट्स के बिना, OS में सुरक्षा कमजोरियाँ हो सकती हैं जिन्हें शत्रुतापूर्ण ताकतें exploit कर सकती हैं। इस प्रकार, इससे हमें आर्थिक या अन्य तरीकों से नुकसान हो सकता है।

सर, मेरी राय में एक साधारण समाधान है, और वह है लिनक्स पर स्विच करना। विंडोज के विपरीत लिनक्स एक ओपन सोर्स OS है, जिसे हम घर पर पुनः निर्मित कर सकते हैं। जैसे लिनक्स ओपन सोर्स OS है, वैसे ही एंड्रॉइड भी ओपन सोर्स OS है, तो इसे भी घर पर फोर्क किया जा सकता है या हम पहले से उपलब्ध समाधान का उपयोग कर सकते हैं।

डेस्कटॉप के लिए उबंटू या SUSE, और मोबाइल के लिए ग्राफीन OS या लिनिएज OS का उपयोग किया जा सकता है, या हम इन्हें फोर्क करके घरेलू विकल्प विकसित कर सकते हैं। ओपन सोर्स पर स्विच करने से पारदर्शिता और सुरक्षा जैसी अन्य लाभ भी प्राप्त होंगे, और यह प्रोजेक्ट जैसे 'प्रिज़्म' (यू.एस. का प्रोजेक्ट प्रिज़्म) द्वारा की जाने वाली जासूसी को कम कर सकता है।

इसके फायदे बहुत होंगे, लेकिन अचानक लिनक्स पर स्विच करने से कुछ समस्याएँ हो सकती हैं जैसे कि संगतता संबंधी मुद्दे। इसके अलावा, लिनक्स का उपयोग करने के लिए एक सीखने की प्रक्रिया भी होती है, हालांकि, पूरे देश को लिनक्स का विशेषज्ञ बनाना मुश्किल होगा, लेकिन सोशल मीडिया का उपयोग करके हम लोगों को बेसिक स्तर पर प्रशिक्षित कर सकते हैं।

यह पत्र मैंने 2021 में प्रधानमंत्री को लिखा था, लगभग उसी समय जब बड़ी बहुराष्ट्रीय कंपनियों ने रूस से अपना समर्थन वापस लेने की घोषणा की थी। मुझे नहीं पता कि यह पत्र प्रधानमंत्री तक पहुँचा या नहीं, क्योंकि मुझे कोई प्रतिक्रिया नहीं मिली।

उस समय के बाद, नई जानकारी सामने आई है और मुझे यह पता चला है कि सॉफ़्टवेयर दिग्गज अभी भी रूस में काम कर रहे हैं, हालांकि खुलकर नहीं, लेकिन आप समझ सकते हैं कैसे।

मेरे लिए इस पुराने पत्र को वापस लाना और ओपन सोर्स के मुद्दे पर रोशनी डालना थोड़ा शर्मनाक है। क्योंकि यह मेरे लिए एक भावनात्मक मुद्दा है। मुझे लिनक्स बहुत पसंद है, और मैं चाहता हूं कि आप सभी भी लिनक्स से प्रेम करें।

यह प्रोग्राम 2013 में एडवर्ड स्नोडेन द्वारा उजागर किया गया था। इसने यू.एस. सरकार द्वारा प्रमुख टेक कंपनियों के माध्यम से बैकडोर का इस्तेमाल कर व्यापक अवैध निगरानी प्रथाओं को दिखाया। इस प्रोजेक्ट में बिना कोर्ट के आदेश या व्यक्ति की अनुमति के लोगों पर जासूसी की जा रही थी। इसने यू.एस. सरकार को संवेदनशील डेटा इकट्ठा करने की क्षमता दी, जो निगरानी या शोषण के अधीन हो सकता था।

Recently I came across this video that claimed that our army men were fooling Lt Gen Hooda. For those who don’t know about Lt Gen Hooda here are two lines on him.

He is a now retired veteran who has served for nearly 40 years in the armed forces, and has headed the northern command (strategically vital area, including the Line of Control (LoC), Line of Actual Control (LAC), Siachen, Kargil, Drass, and the overall security of Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, and parts of Himachal Pradesh) of our armed forces during his tenure as a General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of Northern Command. He is celebrated for leading India’s 2016 surgical strikes and for his distinguished career in the Indian Army.

During his tenure as General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Northern Command he introduced Linux in the armed forces. For people who don’t know about Linux, here is a two lines on it,

It is one of the best operating systems in the world. You say that it is the software which runs other software. Like Android or iOS runs Instagram, Facebook, GMail or games which you play on mobile phones.
It is a safer alternative to Windows and all the big companies (like Google, Facebook, IBM) use Linux over Windows, even the military complexes of the rest of the world uses it. Like the US, Russia or China.

He is an advocate for open-source software as part of a broader initiative to enhance the military's operational capabilities and reduce dependency on proprietary software solutions.

Instead of understanding the importance of open source software, his juniors lied on his face. They were using Windows, but claiming that they were using Linux. Their reason for doing so was, Linux couldn’t make a good powerpoint presentation.

This brings me to the letter I wrote to PM Modi a while ago and now I want to open it to the general public. Here I will paraphrase the letter a bit, and for better cohesiveness. The topic of the letter was to request him to look into the operative systems that we were using (actually still are using).

Dear Sir,

Firstly I would thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to read my letter.

Secondly, I would get straight into the matter without wasting your valuable time. As you know, Russia recently attacked Ukraine. I respect the stand that India took in this conflict, of being neutral and condemning the war. But unlike India other countries are taking sides, few of Russia and others of Ukraine. The west has also decided to take sides, the side of Ukraine. Tough you might know more than a common man like me.

Western nations are giving support to Ukraine by giving weapons, media access, monetary aid and taking the Ukrainians refugees. In this conflict, along with the nations, the multinational giants like Google, Windows, Apple, Tesla and others also have taken the side of Ukraine. Usually such big companies just stay out of the conflicts or give support covertly.

Companies taking sides is not a bad thing as per say, as they are also an arm of the nation/government to exert power and control. From saying all this, what I’m getting at is that this could happen to us (India) also. Though we (India) don’t go around bullying countries or threatening them, but still we (India) are at the mercy of the foreign governments that can pull the plug on these companies and hamper us.

For example companies Microsoft, Apple and Google withdrew their support. For any software to run they need an operating system (OS) which these companies provide. Microsoft provides Windows which is the world's most popular OS for desktop and Google finds Android’s development. The majority of our country run on Windows though be it Courts, Government Offices, or banks. If today Microsoft thinks that they will not support Windows then there will be chaos. As without software support and updates, the OS would have security vulnerabilities and could be exploited by hostile forces. Thus it could hurt us, either economically or otherwise.

Sir, according to me, there is one simple solution, i.e. to switch to Linux. Unlike Windows Linux is an Open Source OS, which we can reproduce and build at home. Like Linux, Android is also an Open Source OS, so it can also be forked and built in house or we could use already available solutions.

Solutions like Ubuntu or SUSE for desktop and Graphene OS or Lineage OS for mobiles could be used or we could fork them and grow an homemade alternative. Going open source would also bring other benefits, like transparency and security, and could reduce the extent of spying that could be done using projects like Prism (Project Prism of U.S.)

The advantages would be great but by suddenly shifting to Linux we might face some problems like compatibility issues. Also there is a learning curve for using Linux, though it will be tough to make the whole population experts in Linux but using social media we can get them to the basic level.

On the positive side, there is an effort to transition to Linux in Government Offices and banks, but the rate of adoption/transition is not that great. Sir I would request you to give the transition a little push in your style.

This was the letter which I wrote to the PM in 2021, around the time when the big multinational companies declared to withdraw their support from Russia. I don’t know whether the letter reached the PM as I got no response back.

After that time, new information has been released and I have got to know that the software giants are still working in Russia though not openly but you can guess how.

For me to bring such an old letter back to shed light on the issue of open source is a bit embarrassing. As to me this is an emotional issue. I love Linux, and I also want you all to fall in love with Linux.

For those army men who were fooling Lt Gen Hooda, firstly I thank you for your service in armed forces, secondly you were wrong by just rejecting Linux by just judging from the ability of making power points.

Tough Microsoft Office is the gold standard for making presentations but there are open alternatives to it. Today the open source alternatives are either on par or will soon catch up with Microsoft office. Examples of alternatives to Microsoft Office Suit are: LibreOffice and OnlyOffice.

According to me LibreOffice is far better than any other competitor. Though it’s just my personal view.

I would like to part with some positive news of Maya OS being deployed in the minister of difference and the BOSS also being deployed in few of the offices. Also I have read about the different ministries including Indian Railways giving contracts to Oracle and Red Hat. Including SBI which has also shifted its 30% computers to Linux based.

Project Prism:

This program was revealed by Edward Snowden in 2013. It demonstrated extensive unauthorised surveillance practices by the U.S. government through major tech companies, using back doors. In this project they were spying on people without court order or permission of the person. This gave the U.S. government the ability to collect sensitive data that could be subject to monitoring or exploitation.
